British Geriatrics Society

The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) is a professional association of doctors practising geriatric medicine. The Society claims a membership of 2500 professionals world wide, most of whom are consultants in geriatric medicine, the psychiatry of old age, public health medicine, general practitioners, and scientists engaged in the research of age-related disease. The Society's membership is open to doctors, nurses, therapists and pharmacists.

The BGS was founded in 1947 with a mission to improve the standards of care for the elderly and to disseminate the results of research in the area of geriatric care through meetings and publications.

It publishes the Scientific Journal Age & Ageing, which is published by Oxford University Press as well as a number of best practice guidelines relating to the governance of older people's care.

The current president is Professor Finbarr Martin (2010 - )
